Elena Rykova étudie le piano et la direction d’orchestre à l’École de musique spécialisée de Oufa, en Russie. Elle étudie ensuite la composition au Conservatoire d’État de Moscou avec Youri Kasparov de 2010 à 2015. En 2015, elle suit le master en composition de la Hochschule für Musik und Tanz de Cologne avec Johannes Schöllhorn. À partir de 2016, elle commence sa thèse de doctorat à Harvard avec Chaya Czernowin et Hans Tutschku, en même temps qu’elle tient le poste de maître de conférence pour les cours de composition acoustique et électroacoustique. Elle a par ailleurs assisté à des master-classes de compositeurs comme Franck Bedrossian, Pierluigi Billone, Beat Furrer, Francesco Filidei, Philippe Leroux, Marc Andre, Klaus Lang, Peter Ablinger, Louis Andriessen, Dmitri Kourliandski, Clemens Gadenstätter et Jean-Luc Hervé. En 2019, elle devient compositrice-conférencière invitée de l’Université de musique de Catalogne à Barcelone.
La compositrice explore une grande variété de genres au sein de la musique et des arts visuels. La première œuvre à son catalogue, la performance musicale The Mirror of Galadriel (2012), est déjà une expérience à la croisée des arts visuels et sonores. Cette pièce englobe l’intérêt de la compositrice pour les relations entre son et mouvement, l’utilisation d’objets trouvés et la relation entre la capacité d’action du compositeur, celle du performeur et leur interdépendance. Tous ces thèmes se retrouvent au fil de son catalogue, composé de nombreuses performances dont les plus récentes sont Sí Hay MONSTER (2018), A message from a world in which we are absent (2018) et Leaves in marble (2019). Elle a par ailleurs collaboré plusieurs fois avec la plasticienne María Korol pour des projets d’animation en stop-motion (Study in Yellow and Violet, 2019 ; A Cow in the backyard, 2020) et d’élaboration d’instruments simples à jouer intuitivement (Clay Instruments, 2017), ou encore avec la designer Martina Schlusnus pour l’installation interactive Music Boards (2016-2017) où la notation musicale se traduit en architecture.
De fait, les travaux d’Elena Rykova sont aussi le lieu d’une recherche poussée sur de nouvelles formes de notation musicale. Avec sa pièce 101% mind uploading (2015), la compositrice commence à développer son propre langage visuel dans des partitions rédigées à la main qui font régulièrement l’objet d’expositions indépendantes en Russie et aux États-Unis. Elle y confronte notation traditionnelle, dessins détaillés des instruments, textes et poèmes, cartes sonores et couches transparentes de papier permettant à l’interprète de lire plusieurs niveaux d’information en même temps ou de n’en choisir qu’un.
Ses œuvres ont notamment été jouées par des ensembles tel que Nikel, Ufa Sextet, Curious Chamber Players, Neopercusíon, Frames Percussion, IEMA, Neko3, Mosaik, Aksiom, Nemø, London Contemporary ensemble, UmeDuo, Calefax Reed Quintet, Ricardo Descalzo, the Black Page Orchestra, ensemble x.y, ensemble Lunaire, Opera lab Berlin, Kebyart saxophone quartet, No Hay Banda, hand werk, Vertixe Sonora et le Moscow contemporary music ensemble.
