Après une licence en composition et en théorie de la musique à la National Taiwan Normal University, Mei-Fang Lin poursuit ses études de composition aux Etats-Unis. Elle obtient son master de l’Université de l’Illinois d’Urbana-Champaign et son doctorat de l’Université de Californie de Berkeley, où elle étudie avec Edmund Campion. Soutenue par le Frank Huntington Beebe Fund for Musicians et le George Ladd Paris Prize, elle se rend à Paris de 2002 à 2005 étudier la composition et suivre, en 2003-2004, le Cursus de composition et d’informatique musicale de l’Ircam encadré par Philippe Leroux.
Ses pièces ont été jouées notamment par Nieuw Ensemble, le Kammerensemble Neue Musik, l’Ensemble Surplus, l’Ensemble Cairn, l’Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, l’Orchestre du Minnesota, le Washington Square New Music Ensemble, Parnassus Ensemble, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players et The California E.A.R. Unit. Sa musique a été programmée à des festivals tels que ISCM World Music Days, l’Asian Composers League Festival, le Festival Résonances, l’International Review of Composers, l’Asian Pacific Festival, Ostrava Music Days et le Festival Synthèse.
Si les techniques de composition de Mei-Fang Lin sont tirées de ses études en Occident, elle incorpore des éléments du taoisme et du bouddhisme dans ses œuvres. Plutôt que d’utiliser des textes poétiques ou traditionnels comme livret de ses pièces, elle s’intéresse surtout à insuffler à son travail la signification abstraite de l’esthétique orientale et le rapport au monde afférent. Elle s’appuie principalement sur le traité du Yi Jing, comme avait pu le faire John Cage. C’est de l’analyse des soixante-quatre hexagrammes du traité qu’est déterminée la structure de certaines de ses œuvres, comme c’est le cas de sa pièce Cursus Multiplication virtuelle (2004).
Son travail sur le geste musical est lui aussi influencé par la philosophie chinoise. Mei-Fang Lin tire de sa pratique du Qi gong et du Tai-chi-chuan un rapport au mouvement et à l’énergie qu’elle applique à ses recherches. Les lignes et phrases musicales représentent alors les gestes physiques des mouvements du corps appris dans le cadre de ces arts. Dans Disintegration (2000) par exemple, afin de créer un flux unique de temps et d’espace, le timbre entrelace les deux directions de mouvement, active et inactive, tirées du Tai-chi.
Mei-Fang Lin est professeur assistant invité de composition à l’Université de l’Illinois de 2007 à 2009, puis professeur associée à la Texas Tech University de 2009 à 2017. De retour à Taiwan en 2017, elle est professeur associé de composition à la Taipei National University of the Arts.
Pianiste, elle interprète des pièces du répertoire contemporain, et en tant que cheffe d’orchestre a dirigé le Taipei National Symphony Orchestra, l’Orchestre du Minnesota et le Parnassus Ensemble.
