Pierre Strauch was born in 1958. A student of Jean Deplace, he was awarded first prize at the Rostropovitch Competition in La Rochelle in 1977. In 1978, he became a member of Ensemble Intercontemporain. His solo repertoire includes works by Zoltàn Kodaly, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, and Iannis Xenakis, among others. In Paris, he premiered Time and Motion Study II by Brian Ferneyhough and Ritorno degli Snovidenia by Luciano Berio. In addition to his activities as a pedagogue and music analyst, Pierre Strauch is also a composer. Notable works include La Folie de Jocelin, commissioned by Ensemble Intercontemporain (1983), Preludio imaginario (1988), Siete poemas for solo clarinet (1988), Allende los mares (1989), and a series of pieces for solo violin, cello, contrabass, and piano (1986-1992).
