Né en France, Christian Wolff déménage aux Etats-Unis dès ses sept ans. Formé aux humanités classiques à Florence et Harvard, il étudie le piano avec Grete Sultan et, brièvement, la composition avec John Cage, qui le prend dès ses seize ans sous son aile, à l’instar d’autres membres de l’École de New York, Morton Feldman et Earle Brown. En dehors de cette expérience de six semaines, où Cage aborde avec lui la structure rythmique, Webern et le contrepoint — et où Christian Wolff introduit John Cage au I Ching, publié pour la première fois en anglais par la maison d’édition de ses parents — Christian Wolff est essentiellement autodidacte en matière de composition.
Après de premiers travaux sur le silence, Christian Wolff s’intéresse à un autre axe de recherche typiquement cageien, le hasard et son rapport à l’interprétation, mais aussi à l’improvisation. À dessein, son travail indique des « situations », sans précision d’entrée en matière ou de durée. Il approfondit plus particulièrement la question de l’improvisation collective comme avec sa pièce de 1964 For 1, 2 or 3 People. Pour noter ces pièces, Christian Wolff passe par différentes approches : partitions graphiques, textes, configurations géométriques…
Ce travail sur le « vivre en commun » et la prise de décisions en groupe qu’offre l’improvisation collective — l’organisation monocratique de l’orchestre est peu représentée dans son catalogue — est en accord avec l’engagement politique qui traverse par ailleurs l’œuvre du compositeur, autre caractéristique qu’il partage avec ses collaborateurs réguliers Frederic Rzewski et Cornelius Cardew. Christian Wolff s’engage auprès du syndicat international Industrial Workers of the World, dont le surnom de « Wobblies » se retrouve dans sa pièce Wobbly Music (1976). Des Exercises (1974-2020), aux Peace Marches (1984-2005) et Changing the system (1973), les pièces du compositeur témoignent de son engagement pour, entre autres, la paix et les droits civiques. Il incorpore à ses œuvres des chants protestataires ou des chansons populaires qu’il “enterre” dans différentes parties de la partition, comme avec Peggy (1992), en référence à la chanteuse américaine Peggy Seeger, dont les chansons sont devenues des hymnes du mouvement pour les droits des femmes.
Lui-même interprète, souvent de son propre travail, Christian Wolff a eu une longue association avec la compagnie de danse de Merce Cunningham à partir de 1953, dont l’approche chorégraphique fait écho à sa propre conception de la structure musicale. En 1968, il rejoint l’ensemble de musique improvisée AMM où il travaille aux côtés de Cornelius Cardew et John Tilbury (qui donne son nom à la série des Tilbury, 1969-1996).
Christian Wolff est membre de l’Akademie der Künste de Berlin et possède un doctorat honoraire en arts décerné par le California Institute of the Arts. Le compositeur a également mené une longue carrière à l’université : il enseigne les humanités classiques à Harvard de 1962 à 1970 puis la musique et la littérature à Dartmouth de 1971 à 1999. Depuis sa retraite cette année-là, il se consacre entièrement à la composition.
Il a reçu des prix et des bourses de l’Académie américaine et de l’Institut national des arts et des lettres, du DAAD de Berlin, du Conseil culturel asiatique, de la Fondation Fromm, de la Fondation pour les arts de la performance contemporaine et de la Fondation Mellon.
Ses œuvres sont publiées par Peters.
