Program note

Cette œuvre, composée en 1913, est l'une des rares incursions de Berg dans la petite forme plus cultivée par Schoenberg et surtout Webern. Berg aborde ce style dans un état d'esprit bien personnel, né de la volonté d'adapter les grandes formes classiques à ces dimensions réduites. On a même pu comparer ces Quatre Pièces au schéma classique (allegro, mouvement lent, scherzo, finale). Elles sont dédiées à Arnold Schoenberg et à sa société de concerts, où elles furent créées en 1919.
