Born in 1976 in Ciudad Real (Spain), Fernando Villanueva studied composition at the Joaquín Turina Conservatory in Madrid with several renowned composers. He has received numerous commissions, notably from the Madrid National Music Auditorium. His works have been performed in Spain and throughout Europe by ensembles such as Taller Sonoro, Court-Circuit, Proyecto Guerrero, and Plural Ensemble, and have been conducted by Jean Deroyer and Beat Furrer, among others. From 2007 to 2009, he participated in the two years of the IRCAM Cursus (IRCAM’s composition and computer music course). This gave rise to the premiere of Bukowski Madrigals on 13 June 2009 by Donatienne Michel-Dansac and the Ensemble L’Instant Donné in the Agora Festival. Fernando Villanueva is particularly interested in new rhetoric derived from recent technologies, as well as in the formalisation of various aspects of musical discourse. He currently teaches composition at the Ciudad Real Conservatory.
