Walter Boudreau est né à Montréal en 1947. Leader de son propre quatuor de jazz à 18 ans, il fonde en 1968, avec le poète Raôul Duguay, le groupe L’Infonie, situé entre le «happening», le jazz et le multi-média. L’Infonie a enregistré quatre disques.Entraîné vers l’écriture, Boudreau étudie l’analyse musicale avec Bruce Mather à l’Université McGill (1968-1970), puis l’analyse et la composition avec Gilles Tremblay et Serge Garant au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal et à l’Université de Montréal respectivement (1970-73). Il en retient surtout la découverte de Webern et du sérialisme. En 1972 et 1973, il étudie en Europe avec Kagel, Stockhausen, Ligeti et Xenakis. «Stockhausen m’a le plus marqué, dit-il, par sa détermination et sa puissance d’invention, même si ma musique est plus proche de celle de Xenakis.»Variations I pour 11 instruments remporte le premier prix au Concours national des jeunes compositeurs de Radio-Canada en 1974. Décrivant l’oeuvre comme «un délire de calculs», Walter Boudreau ajoute néanmoins qu’elle est sérielle dans l’esprit, mais avec une ouverture sur la liberté de «création». Une version révisée est créée sous sa direction par la Société de musique contemporaine du Québec en 1976. C’est lors de cette révision que le compositeur utilise pour la première fois l’ordinateur, découvert au cours d’un stage en musique informatique au Centre de calcul de l’Université de Montréal et à la Faculté de musique de la même institution.
Compositeur prolifique, ainsi que saxophoniste, arrangeur, chef d’orchestre et auteur de bandes sonores de films québécois, Walter Boudreau a écrit pour diverses formations instrumentales. En 1982, il était le plus jeune lauréat à recevoir le Prix Jules-Léger pour Odyssée du Soleil. Actuellement, Walter Boudreau occupe le poste de directeur artistique et de chef attitré à la SMCQ. Son oeuvre Versus a été exécutée en Europe (1988) et à travers le Canada lors de la tournée Olympique de la SMCQ, tandis que Cocktail a été jouée à Paris (1985). Travaillant un matériau de plus en plus quintessentiel, Walter Boudreau compose une musique à la fois sensuelle et cérébrale permettant de multiples niveaux d’écoute.
