Born in Bucharest in 1932, Aurèle Stroë studied music theory, composition and musicology at the National University of Music in his hometown. He went on to become a professor at this institution, teaching orchestration from 1962 to 1975 and composition from 1974 to 1985.

From 1966 to 1969, he attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses. In 1968, following an invitation from the American government, he spent a period in the United States, working in various centres for electronic music and computer-aided composition.

In 1972-1973, he was awarded a grant from the DAAD. In 1985-1986, he served as a guest professor at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

He lived in Mannheim from 1986 until his death on 3 October, 2008.
