Program note
Notturno II was inspired by Haiku, the favourite form of Japanese poetry. Main features of such a poetical form are: the utmost shortness, proceeding for images and themes faintly connected to night. Nothing seems to happen; all is still but exactly for this reason even a falling water drop becomes an enormous, imperious and violent gesture. In Notturno II I tried to interweave a refined texture of “parallel” Haiku in which the underlying feeling of stillness hides a development of every single thread each one towards an ineluctable direction.
The violin is thought out as the principal actor of the piece, it is the soloist, while the clarinet is like its shadow and in performances it is placed far behind of the violin into the distance on the stage.
