George Lewis

George Lewis, né à Chicago en 1952, est actif dans les domaines de l’art et de la musique du XXe siècle, où il est à la fois compositeur, interprète et concepteur d’installations avec ordinateurs.
Il est depuis vingt ans membre de l’Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians, et a étudié la composition avec Muhal Richard Abrams à l’AACM School of Music, et le trombone avec Dean Hey. Diplômé de philosophie du Yale College, il a obtenu plusieurs prix du National Endowment for the Arts dans les catégories musique et inter-arts.George Lewis a présenté ses compositions interdisciplinaires en Europe de l’Est et de l’Ouest, en Amérique du Nord et au Japon. Ses compositions par ordinateur ont été créées au Banff Centre (Canada), à l’Ircam (Paris) et au Studio voor Elektro-Instrumentale Muziek (Amsterdam), ses installations multimédias à la Randolf Street Gallery de Chicago et au Musée de la Villette à Paris, et ses «vidéos musicales interactives», combinant théâtre, vidéo et musique par ordinateur au festival Arte Elettronica de Camerino (Italie) et The Kitchen (New York).
L’activité de George Lewis en tant que tromboniste est illustrée par plus de 80 disques, sur lesquels on le retrouve en tant que compositeur, auteur d’improvisations ou interprète.Il a enseigné à l’Université Simon Fraser, au Conservatoire Royal de La Hague et à l’Art Institute de Chicago, et a été pendant deux ans programmateur musical du Kitchen Centre de New York City. George Lewis est depuis 1991 professeur-assistant à l’Université de Californie, San Diego.
